Novelis Inc. has made an exciting announcement regarding the construction of a solar park at their production site in Pieve Emanuele, Italy. With local authorities granting their final approval, the park will span over 28,000 square meters and is expected to commence generating electricity by the end of this year.
{alcircleadd}The company's commitment to sustainable aluminium solutions is commendable, and one must look forward to this project's positive environmental impact.
Novelis is investing $2.4 million to decarbonize its production in Pieve. This investment will be used to facilitate the development of sustainable aluminium solutions for the European market, with a specific emphasis on low-carbon manufacturing.
The solar park's annual production of approximately 4,000 MWh will play a crucial role in the future. It will allow the plant to shift from carbon-intensive sources to renewable ones, thus reducing its dependence on external energy sources. Additionally, the park's connection to the Italian national grid will enable the surrounding communities to benefit from the energy produced, even outside the plant's operating hours. These future prospects hold great promise for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
The Executive Vice President of Novelis Inc., and President of Novelis Europe, Emilio Braghi, commented: "Investing in renewable energy generation is crucial to decarbonizing our operations and meeting our sustainability goals. Further increasing our capabilities to supply aluminium produced with a lower CO2 footprint will also enable us to help our customers reduce their scope 3 emissions and achieve their decarbonisation goals."
Novelis' Pieve plant is strategically located in the south of Milan, where there are ample sun rays so that the solar panels can be exposed to a huge amount of light for successful energy generation.
The Plant Manager at Novelis Pieve, Laura Basile, exemplified: "In addition to the importance of the solar park for Novelis, the project is also an investment in increasing renewable energy generation in the Lombardi region. I am very proud that our team is part of a company that is leading the way in decarbonizing the aluminium industry while adding value to surrounding communities."
Novelis has committed itself to reducing its carbon footprint by 30% before 2026. Furthermore, it has set a target to become carbon neutral by 2050 or earlier. To meet these goals, Novelis is actively implementing energy-efficient measures and scaling up its recycling efforts. It is also exploring using renewable energy sources to further slash its carbon emissions.
