Novelis' recent efforts to enhance its manufacturing and recycling capacity were primarily motivated by growing vehicle demand for aluminium and Novelis' own environmental emissions objectives, according to Tom Boney, executive vice president and president of Novelis North America.
{alcircleadd}Greater recycling is assisting the company situated in the United States - which is reported to be the world's largest recycler and manufacturer of aluminium sheets - in meeting market demand for the product as well as environmental sustainability.
Novelis has announced intentions to increase aluminium sheet production by 364,000 tonnes per year. 240,000 tonnes of sheet will come from a new $365 million vehicle recycling site in Guthrie, Kentucky, and another 124,000 tonnes from an improvement to its hot mill in Oswego, New York, which was announced on January 11. After the most recent of these previously reported occurrences, Boney talked with Fastmarkets.
The advanced Guthrie plant will reduce carbon emissions by more than 1 million tonnes per year by recycling rather than generating new aluminium, which is an energy-intensive mining/smelting operation, according to Boney.
