Novelis produces 61% recycled aluminium in FY23 making its production lines greener

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Novelis, a leading aluminium flat-rolled products company, recently announced a significant achievement in the industry. According to the company, recycled aluminium made up an average of 61% of its total inputs in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2023.

This impressive figure is due to Novelis' recycling of over 2.3 million tons of aluminium, including 82 billion used beverage cans. This increase in recycling is attributed to Novelis' focus on innovating new circular processes and partnerships, resulting in nearly $2 billion in investments since 2011.

Novelis' push toward aluminium recycling is not only good for the environment, but it also makes business sense. Recycling aluminium requires up to 95% less energy and emits 95% less carbon than producing primary aluminium. As such, Novelis plans to use as much recycled aluminium as possible in its products, reduce emissions across its value chain, and set an industrial precedent.

Similarly, a report by the Energy Transitions Commission suggests that low-carbon steel projects could triple within the next three years, enabling the industry to meet its emission reduction targets. With appropriate financial investments, the report also predicts that 190 million tonnes per annum of 'green' production could be achieved by 2030.

In addition, Hydro has achieved a significant milestone in aluminium production by successfully producing the world's first batch of aluminium using carbon-free hydrogen as an energy source. Looking to use industrial-scale green hydrogen in aluminium recycling and more, Plug Power is installing five-megawatt electrolysers into Ardagh Glass Limmared AB, Hydro Havrand, and the APEX Group's respective plants. These innovative initiatives are paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
