Portugal is set to introduce a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for single-use beverage containers by 2026, aiming to enhance recycling rates and strengthen its waste management system. SDR Portugal will oversee the initiative, with Sensoneo providing the technological infrastructure. This collaboration underscores Portugal's commitment to environmental sustainability and positions it as a leader in Southern Europe's recycling efforts.

Sensoneo's technology will manage the entire DRS process, including collection, reverse logistics and waste tracking. The system will feature user-friendly mobile applications to encourage public participation and simplify recycling. By leveraging Sensoneo's expertise, Portugal joins other European nations that have successfully implemented similar systems.
The inclusion of aluminium containers in the DRS is a strategic move to promote the recycling of this widely used material. By encompassing single-use beverage containers made of plastic, metal and aluminium, the scheme aims to reduce environmental impact and support circular economy principles.
Portugal's DRS will also involve the HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants and Catering) sector, drawing inspiration from Malta's successful initiative in 2022. Malta's inclusion of the HoReCa sector significantly boosted collection rates and Portugal aims to replicate this success to optimise the efficiency of its system.
To ensure accessibility, Portugal plans to establish between 7,000 and 10,000 collection points nationwide. This extensive network will facilitate the return of containers by consumers, contributing to higher recycling rates and a more sustainable waste management system.
As the first mainland Southern European country to implement a nationwide DRS, Portugal sets a precedent for neighbouring nations such as Spain, France and Italy. This initiative highlights Portugal's dedication to circular economy principles and environmental responsibility.
