The President of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has planned to marshal the groundbreaking event during December 2021 for an aluminium smelter in North Kalimantan, Indonesia.
On 23rd November 2021, Septian Hario Seto, the Deputy for Investment and Mining said: “The majority of the investment comes from Indonesian companies.”
However, he did not unfold the names of the company, but in 2020, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium confirmed that they were exploring the potential of developing new smelter aluminium in North Kalimantan.
The construction of smelter is one of the ways to brace the development of the International Port and Industrial Area (KIPI) in East Kalimantan. It is reported that this area will receive investment worth around $100 million cumulatively until 2030.
Alongside aluminium, the other manufacturing industries such as electric battery, petrochemical and green industries will also be erected. Seto also claimed that the development of KIPI will grasp a significant number of workers.
The development of KIPI with the investment can enormously proliferate the economy and provide jobs for around 50,000 people.
Seto said: "In 5 to 10 years, KIPI will be better than Konawe and Morowali because it is 4 times bigger than those two areas.”
Depending on the industrial development map, North Kalimantan in Indonesia is anticipated to contribute 20% to 30% of the national export.
