RecycLiCo earns two complimentary patents in Japan and Australia for lithium-ion battery recycling

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

RecycLiCo Battery Materials Inc. has proudly announced that it has received patent No. 2020237451 from the Australian Patent Office and patent No. 7341598 from the Japanese Patent Office for its lithium-ion battery recycling process. Through the process, RecycLiCo separates aluminium foil from cathode active materials so that they can be sent for recycling.

These two patents bring the company's patent portfolio to a total of ten granted patents and six additional applications for battery recycling worldwide and represent the second patent granted in both regions.

Acquiring patents worldwide for our innovative technology is crucial for strengthening our business model and enabling the widespread implementation of our RecycLiCo solution. These patents not only offer legal protection for our intellectual property but also establish a strong foundation of knowledge and expertise in our field. Our focus on protecting our intellectual property and technological know-how ensures that we maintain a competitive edge, enabling continued growth and keeping us at the forefront of our industry as we bring our process to market.

The newly granted patent covers several innovative developments to the Company's RecycLiCo™ process, including:

- Separating aluminium from cathode active material: Benchmark Minerals predicts that 78% of recyclable material feedstock will come from production scrap generated during lithium-ion battery manufacturing by 2025. This process involves coating cathode active material with lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt onto aluminium foil to create the cathode electrode. Off-spec cathodes are often scrapped as waste, but the RecycLiCo™ process can treat them to produce high-quality cathode materials for battery re-manufacturing.

- Separating graphite and carbon from ground battery concentrates: Black mass, a waste product created by shredding end-of-life batteries, contains valuable metals like cobalt, nickel, lithium, and manganese. According to Fastmarkets, the black mass market is expected to grow from 468,000 to 753,000 tons by 2025. RecycLiCo™ is essential for managing both battery production scrap and black mass material.

- Treating fluoride in electrolyte solution: Electrolyte is a toxic lithium-ion battery material found in some black mass materials. If left untreated, it can cause problems during downstream recycling and harm the environment.

The CEO of RecycLiCo Battery Materials, Zarko Meseldzija, remarked: "We are pleased to add these patents to our portfolio as we continue to build on commercial partnerships that use our novel process."

RecycLiCo Battery Materials Inc. is a company that specialises in the production of sustainable lithium-ion battery materials and their recycling. The company has developed an advanced technology that efficiently recovers battery-grade materials from lithium-ion batteries, thereby addressing the global demand for environmentally friendly solutions in energy storage. The patented, closed-loop hydrometallurgical process, which involves minimal processing steps and up to 99% extraction of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, transforms lithium-ion battery waste into battery-grade cathode precursor, lithium hydroxide, and lithium carbonate that can be directly integrated into the re-manufacturing of new lithium-ion batteries.

Novelis

RecycLiCo intends to convene its annual and special meeting of shareholders on October 31, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. The meeting will be held at the office located at 17942 55th Avenue, Unit #2, Surrey, BC, V3S 6C8, Canada. Every shareholder is cordially invited to attend.
