Rheinmetall has received additional orders for lightweight automotive engineering, including battery trays and cylinder heads for electric and hybrid vehicles. Rheinmetall's Materials and Trade division's Castings business unit has received two new orders.
Both parts will be manufactured in China. The battery trays will be used in the new battery box from the carmaker. Production will begin in 2025 and will last seven years. Rheinmetall's casting business has a long history of creating very complex, sophisticated aluminium cast parts, and the successful nomination of its industrialisation and production services continues the company's push into e-mobility components.
{alcircleadd}Aluminium cast parts essential to crash and certification must adhere to rigorous safety standards, necessitating demanding criteria for the casting process and subsequent processing. To provide long-term safety and functionality in a high-voltage operating environment, it is imperative to provide high strength, complete imperviousness to moisture and filth, narrow tolerances and robust corrosion resistance.
The initial order comes from one of the top ten global manufacturers, a Shanghai-based corporation whose product portfolio comprises internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid models, and fully-fledged e-vehicles. The second order was placed by a joint venture of the same corporation.
The cylinder heads will be made in a gravity casting process and placed in hybrid vehicles beginning in 2023 and lasting four years. Winning these orders emphasises Rheinmetall's standing as a capable partner of the global automotive industry, whose broad knowledge extends beyond modern electric vehicles to hybrid models.
HASCO KSPG Nonferrous Components (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (KPSNC) will undertake the execution of both orders within the territory of China. The company in question is an international collaborative enterprise jointly controlled by Rheinmetall and HUAYU Automotive Systems Co., Ltd. (HASCO), a subsidiary of the SAIC Motor Group in China.
The Castings business unit of Rheinmetall AG comprises two prominent entities, namely KS HUAYU AluTech GmbH in Europe and HASCO KSPG Nonferrous Components (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (KPSNC) in China. The joint ventures are equally owned by Rheinmetall and HASCO, with each company holding a 50 per cent stake.
