Rio Tinto Gove pioneers sustainable method for density measurement in alumina extraction with Rhosonics' SDM

AL Circle

Rio Tinto Gove, Australia's leading alumina extraction facility, has significantly enhanced its process efficiency and safety protocols by adopting Rhosonics' Slurry Density Meter (SDM) technology. This cutting-edge solution replaces traditional radioactive density meters, offering a safer, more accurate, and environmentally friendly method for measuring density in alumina extraction.

Previously, Rio Tinto Gove encountered significant challenges with radioactive density measurement methods, which not only posed safety risks to employees but also introduced operational limitations that impacted the reliability of the extraction process. To address these issues, the facility sought a precise, non-radioactive alternative that could ensure optimal efficiency without compromising safety.

Rhosonics SDM

An engineer with prior experience at a different Rio Tinto site recommended the Rhosonics SDM for its robust design and advanced ultrasonic technology, making it well-suited for the challenging conditions at Rio Tinto Gove. The SDM's precise measurement capabilities, particularly in accurately assessing the density of low-density mud (ranging from 1.1 to 1.3 SG), played a crucial role in improving process control.

Since its installation, the Rhosonics SDM has significantly enhanced Rio Tinto Gove's operational efficiency. The facility has moved from labour-intensive sampling methods to real-time data interpretation, enabling instant adjustments that improve the quality of mud supplied across the plant. This transition has resulted in reduced downtime, increased productivity, and improved overall process control.

Rio Tinto Gove's dedication to safety & sustainability

Comparison data between the Rhosonics SDM and traditional radiation-based technology showed that the SDM not only matched but also exceeded the accuracy of radioactive meters when benchmarked against laboratory samples. This reliability has reinforced SDM's importance as a crucial component in Rio Tinto Gove's alumina extraction process.

Rio Tinto Gove's adoption of the Rhosonics SDM highlights its dedication to safety and sustainability. By removing the need for radioactive materials in its operations, the facility has greatly reduced potential health risks to employees and minimized its environmental impact.
