According to the monthly aluminium recycling statistics from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Department of Interior, the U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 781 million pounds of aluminium scrap during August 2016. This records a five per cent increase from the August 2015 total of 744 million.
According to an USGS estimate, the total aluminium and aluminium alloys recovered from scrap in August 2016 was 300,000 tons which records a slight increase from the last month and an increase of about five per cent from the August 2015 total. Of this, 173,000 t of aluminium was recovered from new scrap, up slightly from the July and 8% more than the amount recovered in August 2015. About 127,000 t was recovered from old scrap, slightly up MOM and YOY.

According to the preliminary data from January to August 2016, the total aluminium recovered from scrap totalled an estimated 2.6 million tons, up 3.5 per cent over the 2015 YTD total of 2.5 million tons. U.S. exports of scrap totalled 1,956 million pounds YTD, down 14.6 per cent from the same period in 2015.9. (Not included in the government’s consumption statistics)
