The Shenyang Aluminium and Magnesium Institute (SAMI) has successfully developed a cutting-edge process for treating fluorine-containing production wastewater and rainwater at the electrolytic aluminium plant. This remarkable achievement has led to SAMI's inclusion of their process in the Catalogue of Industrial Water-saving Processes, Technologies, and Equipment. The catalogue is an authoritative resource that promotes the adoption of sophisticated water-saving techniques, technologies, and equipment to improve industrial water efficiency drastically.
The process can clean and reuse production wastewater and initial rainwater from businesses that use electrolytic aluminium, carbon, and other materials. It can also clean and reuse wastewater from different companies where suspended matter and fluoride are the primary pollutants, and other pollutants are present. Oil removal, sediment removal, ozone-biological activated carbon removal, fluoride removal, and ultrafiltration are all parts of the primary process. There is a strong connection to it, an excellent overall result, and it does eliminate the release of wastewater.
To meet the National Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's "Action Plan for Improving Industrial Water Efficiency" and "Implementation Plan for Recycling Industrial Wastewater," the Ministry and Water Resources created the Catalogue of Industrial Water-saving Processes, Technologies, and Equipment encouraged by the State (2023).
The treated recycled water has a COD level of 5 mg/L and a fluoride level of 1 mg/L. It also meets other standards like the "Aluminium Industry Pollutant Discharge Standard", "Urban Sewage Recycling Engineering Design Code", and "Industrial Water Softening and Desalting Design Code". The unit investment cost is around 0.34 million yuan/square metre. It costs about 2.50 yuan/square metre to run the whole business.
Shenyang Aluminum and Magnesium Engineering and Research Institute Company Limited (SAMI), founded in 1951, is a member of China Aluminium International Engineering Corporation Limited (CHALIECO) and is linked with Aluminium Corporation of China Limited (CHINALCO) in the Fortune Global 500. SAMI is China's first large-scale comprehensive Class A engineering and research institution.
By 2035, China will have established a solid system of water-saving policies, regulations, and standards, as well as a perfect market regulation mechanism and an advanced technical support system, and water resource conservation and recycling will have advanced to a world-class level, establishing a new modern pattern of coordinated development of water resource utilisation and development scale, industrial structure, and spatial layout.
By then, the water-saving scale produced by this technology in SAMI is expected to approach 35 million cubic meters per year, with an economic advantage of more than RMB 200 million annually. At the same time, water treatment technologies may provide significant environmental and social advantages.
