Silent speedsters: Exploring the top electric sedans of 2024

AL Circle

SUVs and trucks dominate the American automotive landscape, while sedans are declining in popularity. However, within the EV market, there are still notable four-door options. Despite lacking SUVs' bulk, elevated viewpoint, and storage capacity, sedans appeal to those who prefer a more traditional car experience. Although they may not accommodate large battery packs as easily, they compensate with lighter weight and enhanced agility. Additionally, sedans often come at a more affordable price point compared to larger vehicles, although premium luxury sedans can still command six-figure prices.

According to a survey conducted by Ducker Carlisle among automakers and Tier 1 suppliers, the ongoing mass market integration of electric vehicles is projected to fuel a rise in aluminium demand until the end of the 2020s. Forecasts from the Aluminium Association suggest that the push for more environmentally friendly transportation options will contribute to a significant uptick in aluminium content per vehicle, which is expected to increase by approximately 100 net pounds per vehicle (PPV) between 2020 and 2030.

Aluminium consumption in electric vehicles

Mike Keown, the Chairman of the Aluminium Transportation Group and CEO of Commonwealth Rolled Products, said, “Consumers want cars and trucks that are more sustainable, more electrified and filled with more technology, and automakers are responding with a host of innovations, all enabled by high-strength, lightweight, and infinitely recyclable aluminium. The aluminium industry is committed to ensuring consumers experience the performance and environmental benefits of aluminium as more and more vehicles are designed with the metal in the years ahead. Greater collaboration with automakers will bring to life this vision set forth by the aluminium industry in its 10-year roadmap. And as mega-casting and closed-loop recycling continue to advance, aluminium producers remain vital partners in helping automakers achieve aggressive carbon neutral targets.”

Abey Abraham, the Principal of Automotive and Materials at Ducker Carlisle, said, “Electrification positively affects aluminium content and compensates for the transition away from powertrain and transmission components, primarily aluminium. As electrified powertrains create significant growth opportunities for aluminium, more stringent fuel economy standards also continue to promote a mass reduction in ICE vehicles.”

Below are the top electric sedans poised to dominate the market:

Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 stands out among sedans in our top electric vehicles priced under $50,000 lineup. Offering great value, it starts at just $40,380 and delivers an enjoyable driving experience. While it does have some quirks, such as numerous vehicle functions being solely accessible through the infotainment system, these oddities are overshadowed by its affordability and impressive range. These minor inconveniences are easy to adapt to or even find endearing. Unsurprisingly, the Model 3 enjoys widespread popularity as an electric vehicle choice.

Hyundai Ioniq 6

Among the sedans featured, the Ioniq 6 stands out as one of the most cost-effective options, beginning at $43,000 and offering remarkable performance. Boasting an impressive driving range of up to 361 miles, it excels in efficiency. Inside, its cabin showcases a blend of innovative design and practicality, ensuring both comfort and functionality. Notably, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 represents the pinnacle of sportiness among Hyundai and Kia's E-GMP vehicles, second only to the high-performance Kia EV6 GT. With its striking design, value proposition, extensive range, rapid charging capabilities, and other advanced technologies, the Ioniq 6 undoubtedly ranks among the finest electric sedans on the market.

BMW i4

While the BMW i4 shares its foundation with the 4 Series Gran Coupe, it stands out as a unique electric vehicle. The i4 is a noteworthy addition to the EV sedan market and offers robust power and exceptional driving dynamics characteristic of BMW. With the rear-drive i4 eDrive40 delivering impressive speed and the i4 M50 boasting unparalleled acceleration, it's evident that this car is built for performance enthusiasts. Despite potential reservations about its distinctive front design and the iDrive 8 infotainment system, the i4 is an electric sleeper, offering remarkable performance at a competitive price point.

Genesis Electrified G80

The luxury division of Hyundai Group has fully embraced both sedans and electric vehicles, with the Genesis Electrified G80 representing a successful fusion of these elements. Derived from a traditional gas-powered model, this electric luxury midsize surpasses its internal combustion counterpart in terms of driving pleasure and entertainment. Its rapid charging capabilities ensure minimal downtime, but one would not mind luxuriating in its opulent interior while the battery replenishes.

Lucid Air

An American manufacturer of electric luxury sports cars and grand tourers, Lucid Group, Inc. is headquartered in Newark, California. Lucid vehicles are designed in California and manufactured at Lucid's factory in Arizona. The standout feature of the Lucid Air lies in its remarkable motor unit. Remarkably compact, it creates extra room inside the vehicle for both passengers and cargo. Moreover, its exceptional power is noteworthy, boasting variants ranging from 480 horsepower to an astounding 1,234 horsepower in the exclusive Lucid Air Sapphire model.

Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan, Porsche's inaugural electric vehicle, has been on the market for several years. While offering greater practicality than the 911, it remains one of the premier driving experiences. Whether navigating highways, conquering tracks, or braving snowy conditions, the Taycan embodies the essence of Porsche's performance legacy, from its base model to its top-tier variants.

Conclusion

The transition towards electric vehicles (EVs) is well underway, with both automotive manufacturers and consumers eagerly embracing environmentally friendly transportation options. Engineered aluminium, a highly versatile material, is playing a key role in driving this transformation by offering numerous advantages.

Engineered aluminium is crucial for improving handling and driving dynamics, as it reduces weight, enhances thermal efficiency, and minimizes charging time. Additionally, it strengthens durability, making it an essential component in advancing EV technology.
