On September 26, Japan's Sumitomo Metal Mining announced that it is ready to invest 16.9 million Canadian dollars or US$12.5 million in a renowned Canadian battery material provider, Nano One Materials, to enhance the overall technology of producing battery materials.
{alcircleadd}This strategic alliance is parallel to Japan and Canada's internal agreement on building a better-knit international battery supply chain, following all the sustainability protocols.
Nano One specializes in advanced battery materials, specifically high-performance cathode materials used in lithium-ion batteries. This is especially important for the aluminium industry because Nano One's technology has the potential to significantly impact the battery sector, which is a crucial downstream application for aluminium.
Nano One uses a patented process called the "One Pot Process" to produce cathode materials, which improves the durability and cost-effectiveness of lithium-ion batteries while optimizing their composition and structure. This contributes to energy storage solutions and has implications for industries such as automotive, electronics, and renewable energy.
Sumitomo already provides the nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) cathode materials used in the Panasonic lithium-ion batteries found in Tesla electric vehicles (EVs).
Sumitomo Metal Mining, also known as Sumitomo Corporation, a diversified global trading company headquartered in Japan, operates in numerous industries, including metal products, infrastructure, chemicals, and energy. Notably, Sumitomo has a strong presence in the metals sector, making it an important player in the aluminium industry.
In the aluminium industry, Sumitomo engages in various activities, including trading and distributing aluminium and its products, such as raw materials like alumina and semi-finished or finished aluminium products. Moreover, Sumitomo participates in projects related to aluminium production and processing.
Thanks to its wide-reaching global presence and extensive network of partners, Sumitomo plays a crucial role in the supply chain of aluminium-related materials and products. This can significantly impact the dynamics of the aluminium industry, particularly in terms of global trade and market trends. With the world moving towards a greener aluminium industry, it is quite important to track the sustainability quotient in the flagship operations of distinct companies. AL Circle has released a comprehensive report citing the intricacies of how the aluminium industry is moving towards a sustainable future named, Sustainability in the Global Aluminium Industry.
With this investment, Sumitomo will become the proud owner of 5 per cent of Nano One. The latter flaunts a few flagship methods for the sustainable production of lithium-ion battery cathode materials, which decreases the process difficulty and cuts down the operational rate of the present process, the Japanese firm stated in a release.
Sumitomo and Nano One will function together to discover manufacturing technology for battery cathode materials to be used in Electric Vehicles (EVs) at a lower rate and with a lesser environmental impact.
Sumitomo, on the other hand, is keen on expanding its production capacity of cathode materials and plans to revamp projects in the future.
