Sweden to boost its recycling efforts with higher deposits on aluminium cans & pet bottles

The deposit for PET and aluminium beverage containers is expected to rise, encouraging consumers to sort materials correctly to benefit the climate and the environment. Returpack, the Swedish DRS company, will raise the deposits on all packaging: from SEK 1 to SEK 2 for aluminium cans and small PET bottles and from SEK 2 to SEK 3 for large PET bottles.

About Sweden’s DRS

The goal for Sweden's DRS is to maintain a stable rate above 90 per cent, yielding significant environmental benefits. In 2023, 2.7 billion packages were deposited and returned to the recycling loop, achieving a deposit rate of 88.5 per cent.

“The refund is that little added value that makes the deposit return scheme work so well. Now we are turning it up a notch by increasing the deposit amount on all packaging, making it even more attractive for consumers to do the right thing,” stated Katarina Lundell, CMO at Returpack.

Increasing the deposit amount is a complex process. The Swedish deposit system currently encompasses over 11,000 items, and producers must update the labels and packaging accordingly. These packages must then be tested, verified, and registered in Returpack's system to ensure the material is suitable for recycling into new beverage containers.

Additionally, the deposit machines must be upgraded to accommodate the new deposit amounts. This careful management sets the deposit system apart from other types of recycling. It creates a circular system where materials are returned to the loop to become new beverage packaging. The new deposit packages are expected to appear on the Swedish market in the second half of 2025.

Sweden reduced carbon dioxide emissions

In 2023, the DRS in Sweden reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 180,000 tons, equivalent to a full year's emissions from a medium-sized Swedish city. Additionally, the DRS save energy and helps preserve virgin raw materials, such as oil and bauxite, by keeping them untouched in the ground.

“The Swedish deposit return system has become a world leader thanks to 40 years of close cooperation between Returpack, producers and retailers, and engaged consumers. This makes a significant difference for the environment and climate. By increasing the deposit amount, we will give the system another boost,” said Tomas Kjellker, CEO of Returpack.

Recycling and more resource-efficient material management are top priorities in Europe and Sweden. In recent years, new rules and directives have been introduced to enhance recycling and reduce waste. Engaging consumers is crucial, and Returpack has over 40 years of experience in building a robust deposit return system that enjoys high levels of awareness and trust.

Returpack’s consumer surveys reveal a strong trust in the deposit system. The system's positive impact on the environment and climate has traditionally been the main motivator for deposits, with up to 85 per cent of respondents agreeing. However, in the latest survey, the importance of the deposit amount as a motivator has grown.
