Sweden’s aluminium scrap export in Q1 2018 drops from a year ago; Germany remains the top importer

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Metal recycling and aluminium, in particular, is gaining a significant importance attributed to increasing industrialization and urbanization, rising income, and spending capability of people in developing economies such as China, Brazil, and India. According to the Global Recycled Aluminium Market Outlook to 2020 data, increased recycling activities in the Asia Pacific region, especially China and India, will contribute significantly to the global recycled aluminium market.

Having said this, it is to be mentioned that Sweden is one of the aluminium scrap exporting countries to several parts of the world, including India and China. According to the global export-import data, Sweden is estimated to export approximately 5684 tonnes of aluminium scrap to India and 10528 tonnes to China. The total volume of scrap to be exported from Sweden to all across the globe is likely to be around 131613 tonnes in 2018, 7 per cent down from 141268 tonnes in 2017.

Nonetheless, the export revenue is forecast to grow in 2018. In 2017, Sweden had generated around US$ 171 million from exporting scrap, which is likely to grow to US$ 248 in 2018, according to the data found. The reason could be the rising demand and price of aluminium scrap all over the globe.

In Q1 2018, the total volume of aluminium scrap export from Sweden stood at 28, 213 tonnes, in contrast to 33,565 tonnes in the corresponding period last year. This shows that the volume dipped by 18 per cent in the first quarter of 2018. Germany remained the mainstay as aluminium scrap importer from Sweden. In Q1 2018, it imported 11, 198 tonnes, slightly down from 11,310 tonnes in Q1 2017.

The revenue also shrank to US$ 29 million in Q1 2018, compared to US$ 38 million in Q1 2017. From the export to Germany, Sweden could yield US$11 million in Q1 2018 against US$14 million in Q1 2017.

Thus, the above data shows that Germany alone accounted for around 60 per cent of the total revenue yielded by Sweden from aluminium scrap export in Q1 2018. In Q1 2017, on the other hand, Sweden's export revenue from Germany stood at 62 per cent of the total revenue earned.
