Tesco is introducing the UK's inaugural tubeless kitchen foil, heralding a significant step towards sustainability. With the implementation of an advanced rolling machine, Tesco is pioneering this innovative product, which will spare 12.5 million cardboard rolls annually.
This week, Tesco patrons will have the privilege of being the first to experience the redesigned aluminium foil made possible by this groundbreaking initiative. By eliminating the need for cardboard cores, Tesco underscores its dedication to reducing superfluous packaging, resulting in an annual saving of 330 tonnes of cardboard.
Bronwen Williams, the Technical Manager at Tesco who has been involved in the project, said, “This new machine has revolutionised foil production, saving hundreds of tonnes of cardboard from needlessly being made in the first place.”
“We are continually looking at ways in which we can cut down on packaging in order to help the environment and hope, after starting with our top-selling kitchen foil line, that we will be able to apply this to the rest of our foil range.”
Tesco has once again demonstrated its commitment to innovative solutions with the introduction of a groundbreaking product: cardboard core-less rolls. This achievement owes much to a cutting-edge machine capable of tightly wrapping aluminium foil around a spindle equipped with air vents. By utilising air pressure through these vents, the foil can be delicately unfurled.
This isn't Tesco's first foray into transforming everyday household items. Two years ago, the company introduced toilet rolls boasting double the usual paper content, resulting in significant plastic packaging reduction—approximately 70 tonnes annually. This reduction stemmed from either maximising paper quantity per roll or compacting rolls more efficiently.
Just last week, Tesco unveiled a line of luxury soft toilet rolls and kitchen towels crafted from recycled cardboard sourced from home delivery boxes, toilet roll tubes, and corrugated card waste. Notably, this innovative process consumes less water and energy compared to traditional tree fibre paper production methods.
These initiatives align with Tesco's overarching 4Rs packaging strategy, aimed at addressing the environmental impact of packaging waste. Since 2020, the company has successfully reduced packaging by over 4,500 tonnes, underscoring its ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
