The U.S. is one of the largest producers of aluminium cans in the world. Aluminium can manufacturers in the U.S. are an important part of the economy. Can manufacturers and the supplier of can sheets put together, form one of the largest job providers and a revenue sources to the state and federal governments. The U.S. is also one of the leading exporters of aluminium cans around the globe.
The U.S. is estimated to export 90991tons of aluminium cans in 2016 as compared to 50711tons of aluminium cans in 2015. This records a growth of about 80 per cent YOY. In last two years, US export of cans is increasing with capacity ramp up in the US facilities and also because of the growing demands for can globally.
The estimated total cost for the export volume amounts to US$ 432 million in 2016 compared to US$ 423 million in 2015. This records a growth of about 3 % YOY. Though the export volume increased considerably, the US dollar value did not rise to match up to that.
The leading importer of aluminium cans from the U.S. is Canada which is estimated to import 50187 tons of aluminium cans from the U.S in 2016 in comparison to 27121 tons in 2015. Another major importer of aluminium cans from the U.S. is Mexico that imported 28766 tons of aluminium cans from the U.S. in 2016, in comparison to estimated 12428 tons in 2015.

Though both these countries consist of the chunk in US aluminium can export volume, countries like Netherland, Bahamas, Costa Rica, Chile and Jamaica e also import a significant volume of cans from the U.S.

After Ball Corporation acquired Rexam PLC in June 2016, the company became the largest manufacturer of beverage cans in the world. Due to the growing recognition of the aluminium can as one of the most recycled aluminium products in the world and as one of the most sustainable packaging solution, the use of aluminium cans is growing around the world, especially in developed countries. This opens up the door for can-makers in the U.S. to expand capacity and export more and more aluminium cans around the globe.
