The Thomson Elite 35mm aluminium handlebar is 800mm wide and with an extended, straight portion in the middle to lessen stress concentrations. Due to the 50mm clamping area, a variable bent profile for a more compliant ride is possible. For the best fatigue life, bars are butted and tapered in numerous stages.
The product was also selected for Singletrack Editor’s Choice Awards 2022. Made using 7050 aluminium, the centre rise of the flat bar is 8 mm, the mid-rise is 20 mm, and the most significant surge is 35 mm. To withstand damage from crashes and ground contact, the ends of the bar are reinforced from 1.4 to 1.6mm.
To achieve a smooth look in the bends and tapered parts on the outside and precise tolerance control over the wall thickness inside, Thomson uses hydraulic press forming to create its handlebars.
The 7050 aluminium alloy is a heat-treatable alloy which is extremely strong and features high corrosion cracking resistance. It also has good electrical conductivity thanks to the 40 per cent copper content and is a standard commercial aerospace alloy.
