Top 10 trend-setting uses of aluminium in 2022 under the packaging sector

The considerable demand for and applications of aluminium is evident in the midst of expanding innovations and experimentation in the packaging sector. The creative uses of aluminium in the packaging industry are increasing as customers are preferring more for eco-friendly and sustainable packaging solutions. Not only this, many companies are shifting to using aluminium from other metals like glass, steel, etc. Small and large businesses are contributing to the transition to a cleaner and greener world.

Here is a list of the top 10 trendsetting uses of aluminium in the packaging sector:

Hylux:  To begin with, Hylux, a US-based manufacturer of health beverages, debuted its unflavoured spring water in a new recyclable aluminium bottle last month. Reusable tops on the bottles allow for several uses, and after recycling, they may be made into new bottles in as little as 60 days. The Boston campus of Northeastern University will be the first purchaser of the bottles, which will initially be made accessible to select organisations for sale and distribution within their networks.  

Novelis Inc:  At ALUMINIUM 2022 in Düsseldorf, Novelis Inc., an American manufacturer of industrial aluminium, debuted its novel laminated aluminium surfaces for beverage can ends. The can ends, which are laminated with black film, are particularly well-liked in high-end and avant-garde beverage items. The laminating film complies with all standards set out by the food and beverage industries and is devoid of PFAS, BPA, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl compounds.

Lavazza: The Italian coffee company Lavazza used aluminium as the main component for its coffee pods to provide Australian customers with a sustainable product. Many well-known corporations are changing their practices in order to conform to a more sustainable attitude toward the environment as a result of the Paris Environmental Act which started on 2016. The carbon-neutral aluminium capsules made by Lavazza are the ideal illustrations of what a business should do to develop a "Roadmap to Zero," a sustainability objective to achieve total carbon neutrality by reducing all primary and tertiary emissions produced along the whole industrial chain.

Sainsbury's: UK-based Sainsbury's completely shifted from using plastic to creating its signature coffee pods out of aluminium, which is infinitely recyclable. This effort at sustainability was followed by an initiative taken by Sainsbury's, which changed some of the packagings for its coffee pods from plastic to aluminium the year before to let consumers recycle their old coffee pods at home. The only work required of the users would be to empty, wash, and place the aluminium pods in their neighbourhood kerbside recycling bin.

Trivium Packaging: Trivium Packaging, one of the top suppliers of high-quality and recyclable metal packaging, announced its entry into a new category of aluminium packaging products as the need for distinctive aluminium packaging expands beyond beverage cans to personal care and packaged food. The company aims to produce aluminium closures for liquid edible oil, which may result in potential revenue for the company. Although aluminium has long been used for more traditional large tins or aerosol containers, this is the first time the metal has been adapted to be appropriate for edible oil seals.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company: A California-based brewery named Anderson Valley Brewing Company (AVBC) stated they are switching from glass bottles to aluminium cans, the most ecologically friendly beer container imaginable. AVBC reduced their shipping by around 60% by switching from glass to cans. Cans are better for transportation since they are lighter and more efficient. Aluminium cans help keep beer fresher for longer by permitting a more airtight seal and blocking all UV radiation.

Penrhos Spirits: The award-winning spirits of Herefordshire-based Penrhos Spirits will be reintroduced starting in the winter of 2022–2023 in specially made aluminium bottles. The firm is also introducing a brand-new, limited-edition beverage in honour of its approaching packaging objectives for the New Year. As part of Penrhos' ongoing dedication to sustainability and minimising its carbon footprint, the team decided to design the aluminium bottles to provide consumers with a more ecologically friendly alternative to glass bottles. Aluminium bottles are now available after the commercial availability of 2.5-litre refillable pouches earlier in 2022. Compared to glass bottles, these pouches need less energy to create and transport since they can be recycled by on-trade customers. The Penrhos range of alcoholic beverages will only be offered in bottles made of aluminium starting in 2023.

UA Packaging: China-based UA Packaging replaced plastic with aluminium to create its latest luxurious ALU Airless jar. The company's aluminium packaging profile, which primarily strives to serve premium skincare brands, gained a respectable addition with this move. With the emerging ideology of sustainability and net zero emissions, UA Packaging added aluminium to its standard method of container production. Additionally, aluminium has a natural shine that might draw people with money invested in the business. The ALU Airless jar inspired the industry to create its own eco-luxe packaging line that combines elegance and sustainability. In comparison to standard packaging options, the ALU Airless jar utilises 50% less plastic, eliminating the usage of other plastic that serves only as extravagance and decoration. It replaces the thick wall plastic of luxury skincare containers with 100% recyclable aluminium.

TEAKOE: A fizzy tea beverage company called TEAKOE introduced its trademark products in environmentally friendly, 100% recyclable aluminium cans as a new sustainable packaging solution. TEAKOE worked with Denver-based design firm Lamora Design to develop the new brand image. The aluminium can not only protects the beverage from any atmospheric reactions but also gives the brand's name an appealing appearance.

Organic Oral Care: With the launch of its new recyclable aluminium bottles for its growing line of mouthwashes, Organic Oral Care (ORL) shifted from plastic, glass etc., to aluminium. Compared to their original glass counterparts, these new eco-friendly bottles are more lightweight, eco-friendly, and shatterproof. Using aluminium instead of plastic is an excellent initiative adopted by ORAL. The studies state that somewhere about 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills every year. That amounts to more than 700 bottles each second! This astonishing finding was the main driving force behind Organic Oral Care's (ORL) decision to switch to recyclable aluminium bottles from plastic ones.
