Toshiba’s new SCiB battery featuring aluminium baseplate can be a game changer for EVs

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

In a bold leap toward the future of sustainable mobility and energy storage, Toshiba Corporation has introduced its latest advancement in lithium-ion battery technology—a new SCiB module specifically designed for use in electric buses, electric ships, and stationary energy systems. Engineered to meet the growing demand for high-power, rapid-charging applications, the new lithium-ion module features an innovative aluminium baseplate that delivers twice the heat dissipation of existing models.

Scheduled for commercial release in mid-April 2025 across both Japanese and international markets, this next-generation battery module delivers approximately twice the heat dissipation performance of Toshiba’s existing modules.

The new SCiB module represents a major leap forward in battery innovation and is particularly well-suited for applications that require sustained high input and output over short periods—operating conditions that typically generate significant heat and can accelerate battery degradation.

Unlike traditional resin-based baseplates, aluminium offers far superior thermal conductivity. By integrating this material into the module’s design, Toshiba has successfully reduced thermal resistance and significantly improved heat management performance. Recognizing aluminium’s high conductivity, which necessitates careful electrical insulation from the battery cells, Toshiba has engineered a novel structure that maintains the required voltage resistance, ensuring both safe and efficient operation.

Toshiba’s current SCiB batteries are already recognized for their key strengths, including enhanced safety, extended lifespan, reliable performance in low temperatures, rapid charging capabilities, high power input and output, and a broad effective state of charge.

These batteries are used across a wide range of applications, including hybrid vehicles, electric buses, cranes, trains, and automated guided vehicles in logistics centres. Toshiba offers a complete battery solution, supplying not only individual cells and packs but also modules that can be arranged in series or parallel to meet specific voltage and capacity requirements.

With the addition of this new product to its module lineup, Toshiba aims to deliver more versatile and customizable solutions, addressing the varied needs and performance demands of its customers across different industries.
