Trash to treasure: Singapore turns aluminium waste into glory for World Aquatics Championships 2025

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Get ready, sports fans! The World Aquatics Championships 2025 is splashing into Singapore from July 11 to August 2 and it's creating ripples for all the right reasons. For the very first time, a Southeast Asian nation is hosting this massive event, with the Singapore Sports Hub and Sentosa Island being its pride.

But here's the highlight: The medals. They're not only shiny – they're sustainable! Here is to the "Trash to Treasure" programme, where all championship medals will be crafted from recycled aluminium cans.

Now, where are all these aluminium cans coming from? The organisers have partnered with five PAP Community Foundation pre-schools, eight primary schools and three secondary schools to collect 100,000 aluminium cans. Their plan is to turn them into 5,000 medals of glory! Talk about turning soda cans into symbols of triumph!

By open-loop recycling, the cans will be smelted, cleaned and forged into medals by the local furniture company Ipse Ipsa Ipsum, every medal taking approximately 20 cans. That's approximately 150 grams of recycled excellence per medal! With more than 25,000 athletes participating in 77 events in six aquatic sports, Singapore is making waves on the global stage in sport, creating a new benchmark for green events.

So, sports fans, what's more awesome than supporting your favourite athletes? Having the knowledge that the medals they're competing for were once merely trash cans, now re-engineered as badges of victory and a cleaner tomorrow!

Are you ready to witness history? Because Singapore definitely is!
