Chinalco Carbon Enterprises recently organised a training course on the production technology of prebaked anodes to enhance the theoretical knowledge and technical skills of their technicians. The initiative aimed to boost the technical progress of carbon production and improve the quality of anodes manufactured by Chinalco.
The training session, held on December 11th at Zhengzhou Research Institute, was facilitated by two experts from R&D Carbon Limited - Dr. Marcus Meier and Peter Sulger. The General Manager of Zhengzhou Research Institute, Chen Kaibin, expressed his view that the institute is not only a technology research and development base of Chinalco but also a training centre for technicians. The training provided by the institute is vital support for the overall improvement of Chinalco's technological progress.

R&D Carbon Limited is a globally recognised research and development institution and an industry leader in carbon for aluminium. They have played a major role in developing the global carbon anode production and testing technology for aluminium, making important contributions to the industry's development. R&D Carbon Limited has had a long-standing relationship with Zhengzhou Research Institute since the 1990s, when the institute introduced many of R&D's advanced instruments and equipment, providing crucial support to scientific research and development in the carbon field.
The cooperation and exchanges between the two sides have become increasingly frequent, forming a profound friendship. Dr Marcus Meier, in his speech, reviewed the 25-year communication with Zhengzhou Research Institute of Chinalco and believed that the holding of this training course marked a new stage of cooperation between the two sides. He introduced the basic situation of R&D Carbon Limited and its technical achievements over the years. Dr. Meier hoped that through this training, he would further deepen technical exchanges and cooperation with Chinalco, providing strong support for the development of Chinalco's carbon enterprises.
The training program provided to the carbon enterprises affiliated with Chinalco was comprehensive, systematic, and targeted. The program comprised training sessions, question-and-answer sessions, and communication exercises. The participants unanimously agreed that the training was highly beneficial, and it provided them with a refreshing change and a morale boost.
The training program was attended by 60 leaders and technicians from the carbon enterprises affiliated with Chinalco. The training program is expected to enhance the technical progress of aluminium-prebaked anode production and promote the high-quality development of carbon enterprises.
China's prebaked anode market in December 2023
The domestic prebaked anode trading price remained stable, with no significant changes observed. Although the GPC and coal tar pitch (CTP) markets did not perform well, the lack of sufficient cost support was apparent. Adverse weather conditions in some regions caused a slowdown in CTP shipments, but improved weather later allowed prebaked anode producers to maintain moderate raw material inventories. In terms of production, prebaked anode producers generally maintained stable production levels. On the supply side, prebaked anode availability remained largely stable, with most producers in Shandong and Hebei actively processing orders. The overall operational rate in Henan was relatively low, while the supply situation in the Northwest, North, and Southwest China regions was favourable. In conclusion, the prebaked anode market exhibited stability in trading prices, production, and supply, with variations in regional operational rates and weather-related impacts on shipments.
