As Expo 2025 Osaka begins, the UK Pavilion welcomes visitors with the theme 'Come Build the Future—a tribute to British creativity'. Wrapped in a pixelated skin of folded, perforated aluminium panels, the pavilion's façade shifts gently with the changing daylight and transforms after dark to reveal a glowing Union Jack.
This dynamic, light-responsive surface pays homage to the origins of programmable technology—such as punch cards, looms, and binary code—while drawing a thread from Britain's historic textile industries to its modern-day leadership in gaming, digital design, and systems thinking.
Designed by London-based WOO architects, the pavilion features a striking, angular modular design that reflects the nation's journey from the Industrial Revolution to the digital era, blending heritage with innovation through a clear and purposeful architectural form.
Visitors explore a seamless journey through exhibition galleries, lush courtyards, tea rooms, and a rooftop terrace bar. WOO architects have crafted an intuitive, free-flowing spatial layout without a prescribed path while maintaining a clear sense of order and progression. Curated by Immersive International, the exhibitions weave together narratives of British design, science, and culture—from 19th-century steam engines to today's AI-driven algorithms.
The Pavilion's mascot, PIX, also plays a subtle yet engaging role, integrated via augmented reality to encourage interaction without overwhelming the visual identity of the space. The UK Pavilion's façade is crafted from recycled aluminium panels, locally sourced where possible, resulting in a skin that is both expressive and practical. Beneath it, a modular steel framework—developed in collaboration with ES Global—is lightweight, demountable, and purposefully designed for reuse.
