The refinery's construction is anticipated to boost the local economy by generating employment and driving economic activity in the region. Mr Brentum reaffirmed the government's support for the initiative, calling it a testament to its dedication to leveraging Ghana's natural resources for national development. He also praised the management of Ghana Bauxite Company for their investments in improving the company's operations.

Western North Regional Minister Wilbert Petty Brentum expressed optimism about the project, emphasising its potential to improve operational efficiency and create more job opportunities for the people of Awaso and nearby communities.

Mr Gyedu stated that the proposed refinery will greatly enhance the company's operations by converting raw bauxite into alumina, a crucial material for aluminium production. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on foreign refineries while increasing the overall value of the company's output. He also highlighted that local refining would create jobs, boost revenue, and play a key role in Ghana's economic growth.

Mr Brentum emphasised the need to support Indigenous businesses, expressing confidence in their potential to succeed when given the opportunity. He highlighted that fostering local ownership will generate employment, drive economic growth, and lessen dependence on foreign investment.

Ghana Bauxite Company's General Manager, Alexander Gyedu, shared a brief history of the company, noting its operations in Awaso date back to the 1940s. He highlighted that the company is Ghana's first and only operational bauxite mine, currently owned by Ofori-Poku Company Limited (OPCL), which holds an 80% stake, while the Government of Ghana, through the Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC), retains the remaining 20 per cent.

The Regional Minister emphasised that Ghana Bauxite Company's progress under local ownership demonstrates the potential for indigenous businesses to succeed when given the right opportunities. He underscored that empowering local enterprises aligns with the government's strategy to drive economic prosperity through private sector growth.

Mr. Gyedu highlighted OPCL's commitment to the welfare and development of its workforce. When OPCL assumed majority ownership in 2022, the company had 483 employees. By the end of February 2025, this number had grown to 1,158, with ongoing recruitment efforts to further expand production capacity.
