This week has been highly eventful for the upstream aluminium industry, both for the bauxite and the primary aluminium sector. To begin with, Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah announced that the country will restore constitutional rule in 2025, according to global media reports. He added that legislative and presidential elections are scheduled to follow a constitutional referendum within a reasonable timeframe. Indonesia has launched a new sovereign wealth fund, Daya 'Anagata Nusantara' (Danantara), with an initial commitment of US$20 billion. A major global aluminium producer has requested a premium of USD 260 per tonne from Japanese buyers for primary metal shipments in April–June (Q2), marking a 14 per cent increase from the current quarter (Q1, 2025). Guinea, the world’s largest bauxite producer, has been under military rule since September 2021, when Colonel Mamady Doumbouya seized power from President Alpha Condé, citing corruption, human rights abuses, and economic mismanagement.
Indonesia has unveiled a new sovereign wealth fund, Daya ‘Anagata Nusantara’ (Danantara), with an initial commitment of US$20 billion. Launched last week by President Prabowo Subianto, Danantara is designed to function as both an investment vehicle and a holding company for the country’s key state-owned enterprises.

Tensions escalated on Thursday during a public hearing for the proposed Balada bauxite mining project in Nandapur block, as local villagers voiced strong opposition. Organised by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) under Ministry of Forest and Environment guidelines, the meeting sought community feedback on the project’s environmental impact.
During the overnight session, the most-traded alumina 2505 futures contract opened at RMB 3,348 per tonne, hitting a high of RMB 3,380 and a low of RMB 3,348, before closing at RMB 3,370 per tonne — up 0.66 per cent. Open interest declined by 5,797 lots to 168,000 lots.
