India's largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium, implemented Internet of Things (IoT)-based technology for cooling water analysis and total water usage reduction at its power facilities in Jharsuguda, Odisha. These power plants employ a network of cooling towers with natural draughts and a water-based recirculating cooling system.
{alcircleadd}The IoT technology uses current operating data and suggests the best water quality parameters, which eventually result in water conservation by raising CoC (or cycle of concentration, i.e., reuse of the same water multiple times for cooling the condenser). Reduced water use, better water quality, less scaling and corrosion, and improved other operational factors brought about by this technology have resulted in an overall increase in station heat rate (a measure of power plant efficiency).
“Being India’s largest producer of aluminium, we are manufacturing for the future. This is seeing us extensively use state-of-the-art technologies to make our operations more responsive, reliable and future-ready. Accelerating our digitalisation programmes, intelligent automation and in-house innovations have enabled us to bolster our manufacturing excellence, use resources judiciously and boost workforce safety, making us agile in responding to market dynamics,” said Mr Rahul Sharma, CEO – Aluminium Business, Vedanta Ltd.
Currently, in a time of expansion, Vedanta Aluminium is well-positioned to build the market for the foreseeable future. The firm is set up to provide a disruptive step-change and become future-ready, from assets to personnel to the vertical integration of operations.
Throughout the value chain, tailored uses of cutting-edge technology assist Vedanta Aluminium in streamlining operations, enhancing customer satisfaction, and introducing fresh business strategies. As a result of the digital transformation, businesses are becoming more efficient and agile, and consumers, workers, business partners, and stakeholders are discovering new values.
