World alumina production in January 2023 totalled 11.647 million tonnes, with China accounting for more than 50 per cent, found the International Aluminium Insitute. The world’s biggest alumina and primary aluminium producer churned out 6.7 tonnes of aluminium ore in January, which majorly remained unchanged from 6.68 million tonnes tonnes in December 2022. However, on a year-on-year calculation, China’s alumina output registered a hike of 4 per cent from 6.430 million tonnes.
For January, world alumina production recorded a month-on-month drop of 0.42 per cent from 11.696 million tonnes and a year-on-year downfall of 1.09 per cent from 11.775 million tonnes.
World daily average alumina production was recorded at 375,700 tonnes in January, down by 0.42 per cent from 377,300 tonnes month-on-month and 1.08 per cent less than 379,800 tonnes year-on-year.
The Oceania region, being the world’s second-largest producer of alumina, churned out 1.712 million tonnes of ore. That was a drop of 0.98 per cent from 1.729 million tonnes in December 2022 and a plunge of 2.34 per cent from 1.753 million tonnes in January 2022. Oceania’s daily average production of alumina was 55,200 tonnes in January 2023, reflecting a dip of 600 tonnes from 55,800 tonnes a month ago and a plunge of 2.3 per cent from 56,600 per tonnes a year earlier.
China’s daily alumina output in January 2023 stood at 216,100 tonnes, up by 600 tonnes from 215,500 tonnes in December 2022, despite the monthly production remaining restrained. On a year-on-year calculation, China’s daily production in January edged a hike of 4.19 per cent from 207,400 tonnes.
