In the third quarter of 2022 ended September 30, world alumina production edged an increase of 1.22 per cent Q-o-Q to stand at 35.677 million tonnes, found the International Aluminium Institute. In the second quarter, the output was at 35.246 million tonnes, reflecting a rise of 6.18 per cent from 33.196 million tonnes in Q1 ended March 31. These data showed a consistent hike over each quarter this year though the rate of growth decreased in the third quarter compared to the second.
However, in September 2022, world alumina production recorded a decline of 3.39 per cent month-on-month to 11.596 million tonnes. The output in August also stood lower at 12.003 million tonnes versus 12.078 million tonnes in July.
But on a year-on-year basis, world alumina output in September grew 3.61 per cent from 11.192 million tonnes.
In the first nine months of the year, world alumina production across the globe aggregated at 104.119 million tonnes, which was majorly unchanged from 104.177 million tonnes during the same period last year.
In China, the world’s leading alumina producer, churned out 6.8 million tonnes of the ore in September, down by 3 per cent from 7.01 million tonnes a month ago but up by 10.03 per cent from 6.18 million tonnes a year earlier. During July-September, China’s alumina production totalled 20.760 million tonnes compared to 20.160 million tonnes in Q2 and 18.890 million tonnes in Q3 2021.
In the Oceania region, alumina output in September came in at 1.565 million tonnes – 0.82 per cent less than 1.578 million tonnes in August and 8 per cent than in September 2021. In the second quarter of 2022, the Oceania region witnessed an alumina output of 4.850 million tonnes, down by 3.85 per cent month-on-month from 5.044 million tonnes and 7.83 per cent year-on-year from 5.262 million tonnes.
World daily average production of alumina clocked at 386,500 tonnes in September 2022, slightly dwindled by 0.18 per cent M-o-M from 387,200 tonnes but climbed up by 3.59 per cent from 373,100 tonnes Y-o-Y.
