California-based supplement brand youtheory, a member of the Jamieson Wellness family, has taken significant steps to protect marine life with its latest omega supplement and its eco-conscious packaging. The new Ocean-Friendly Omega capsules are derived from algae oil and will be packed in sustainable aluminium bottles, which youtheory's VP of Marketing, Cindy Sherman, describes as the "obvious choice" for an ocean-friendly, sustainable solution.

Similarly, when it came to packaging the product, youtheory aimed to go "above and beyond" in its commitment to protecting the ocean by eliminating plastic. Sherman points out that plastic often ends up in the ocean, posing a threat to fish and other marine life. The company's packaging criteria centred on three key aspects: sustainability, durability, and premium quality.
"We wanted to differentiate ourselves with the Omega nutrient coming from plants instead of fish. While this allows us to offer a vegan solution, we also wanted to leverage the ocean-friendly nature of not harming the fish. We sought to reduce our environmental footprint by choosing materials that are recyclable and have a lower impact on the planet. Additionally, we needed a packaging solution that would maintain the integrity and freshness of our products," added Sherman.
Twist cap from Trivium Packaging
In early 2023, youtheory chose a stock threaded aluminium bottle with a twist cap from Trivium Packaging, which was modified to feature a tamper-evident neckband made from corn starch and an induction seal liner. According to Sherman, this bottle meets the company's sustainability goals exceptionally well, offering 100 per cent recyclability and a high strength-to-weight ratio.
"We sought to reduce our environmental footprint by choosing materials that are recyclable and have a lower impact on the planet. Additionally, we needed a packaging solution that would maintain the integrity and freshness of our products," added Sherman.
This design uses less material while still ensuring the product inside remains protected. The aluminium packaging also provides a barrier against UV light, oxygen, and moisture, thereby meeting youtheory's the theory's durability requirements. To meet its premium-quality requirement, youtheory sought a package design that reflected its dedication to excellence and innovation.
Trivium delivered on this front as well, providing a sleek and modern bottle that Sherman notes enhances the premium feel of youtheory's products and offers customers an elevated experience. The package is directly printed by Trivium during production, featuring custom graphics from youtheory and incorporating How2Label, which offers guidance to consumers on the recyclability of each component.
