RUSAL: 25 years of global leadership, innovation, and resilience

3MINS READ

From a single plant in Siberia to a global aluminium powerhouse, RUSAL's 25-year journey is a story of bold vision, technological excellence, and enduring commitment to sustainable development.

25 years of Rusal

In 1994, amid the deep crisis in Russia's industrial sector, a transformation quietly began at the Sayanogorsk Aluminium Plant. Under the leadership of Oleg Deripaska, a clear strategy of modernization, accountability, and long-term vision was implemented. Within just three years, the plant not only became an industry benchmark but laid the foundation for what would become one of the world's leading aluminium producers.

From regional roots to global integration (1997–2007)

  • In 1997, the creation of Siberian Aluminium marked the beginning of a vertically integrated structure, with production capacities spanning from alumina refining to finished aluminium products.
  • By 2000, RUSAL was born through a strategic merger, consolidating Russia's key aluminium assets and rapidly joining the top three aluminium producers globally, alongside Alcoa and Alcan.
  • Over the next decade, RUSAL expanded its footprint across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Latin America, acquiring critical assets and securing raw material sources in Guinea, Guyana, and beyond.
  • In 2007, the merger with SUAL and Glencore's aluminium assets created the United Company RUSAL — the world's largest aluminium producer with a full production cycle.

Driving innovation and sustainability

  • RUSAL invested heavily in R&D through the establishment of the Engineering and Technology Center and the launch of proprietary electrolysis technologies like RA-300, RA-400, and later the groundbreaking RA-550.
  • The introduction of Allow — RUSAL's low-carbon aluminium brand — in 2017 positioned the company at the forefront of sustainable metal production.
  • Environmental modernisation programs at major smelters, ISO 14001 certification, and the development of inert anode technology reflect RUSAL's ongoing commitment to environmental leadership.

Social impact and resilience

  • RUSAL's Center for Social Programs has supported hundreds of community-driven initiatives since 2004.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company built medical centres in seven Russian cities in record time, reinforcing its role as a responsible corporate citizen.
  • Housing programs and support for regional infrastructure development continue to improve living conditions in cities where RUSAL operates.

Navigating global challenges (2018–Today)

  • Despite sanctions and geopolitical restrictions, RUSAL maintained operational stability by adapting its logistics and expanding into new markets, including China and the Middle East.
  • The company has pioneered local bond placements in RMB and AED, ensuring financial sustainability and strategic flexibility.
  • Strategic investments — such as in the Hebei Wenfeng smelter and the upcoming Leningrad Alumina Refinery — are helping to restore supply chain resilience.

A future forged in aluminium

As RUSAL celebrates 25 years of industrial leadership, its journey is far from over. The company remains focused on innovation, sustainability, and global partnerships to shape the future of aluminium — a metal essential to the energy transition, circular economy, and modern infrastructure.
