As he passed away on October 9, 2024 (at the age of 86), we reminisce on his copious contributions to the aluminium industry:

Tata Aluminium:

Between the 1990s and early 2000s, Ratan Tata realised the potential of the aluminium sector as a principal component of India's industrial growth. He formed Tata Aluminium as part of the Tata Group's diversification strategy.

Later, the collaborative venture with Alcan (now part of Rio Tinto) was significant, which immensely streamlined technology transfer, enabling Tata Aluminium to access advanced production practices and expertise, which was required for establishing a competitive edge in the global market.

Sustainability Initiatives:

In the earlier days, Ratan Tata championed sustainable development, ensuring that Tata Aluminium adopted practices that minimise environmental impact, including implementing measures to reduce water usage and waste generation during production.

Later, Tata Aluminium adapted to the global client's needs and shifted to supplying raw materials for aluminium production and customised solutions for construction purposes. Tata Chemicals became a part of the aluminium game as it became a major supplier of caustic soda, soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, among others.

Global Positioning and Competitiveness:

Under his leadership, all Tata sister concerns consuming and benefitting from the aluminium industry, be it aluminium-built Jaguar Land Rover cars or Air India airbuses, focused on meeting international quality standards, essential for penetrating global markets. This commitment to quality helped build a strong reputation for Indian aluminium products.

Mr. Ratan Tata actively explored export opportunities, positioning his brands as a reliable supplier in the international market. The company participated in global exhibitions and trade fairs, showcasing its products and capabilities.

Community Development and CSR:

Ratan Tata emphasised Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through his initiatives, which provided local communities with job opportunities. This eventually benefited the project operations. Tata launched training and upskilling programmes for workers, contributing to the overall growth of the workforce and ensuring higher employability chances. The workshop and training programme is known across the country as Tata Strive.
