The Alba Calciner and Alba Smelter in Bahrain have received Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V2 (2022) Certification. This is the first Middle Eastern entity to be certified against the new CoC Standard V2, released in May 2022 after a multi-year review process. Alba was certified to the ASI Performance Standard V2 in January 2020.
{alcircleadd}Aluminium Bahrain has been successfully certified against the ASI CoC Standard V2 (2022) for producing and marketing primary aluminium from alumina, petroleum coke calcination, water desalination, and anode manufacturing, smelting, casting, and captive power generation at the Alba Calciner and Alba Smelter in Bahrain. Alba is one of the world's biggest smelters, producing around 1.56 million tonnes of primary aluminium annually.
"Sustainable development is not a destination, but rather a journey that is supported by the six strategic priorities under the Company's ESG Roadmap. Achieving ASI's Chain of Custody certification underlines our commitment to go beyond Corporate Social Responsibility and transform the way we conduct our business through responsible sourcing and sustainable production," said Ali Al Baqali, Alba's Acting Chief Executive Officer.
DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd conducted an impartial, third-party audit of the two Alba facilities. The ASI CoC Standard V2 specifies the standards for establishing a Chain of Custody for material generated and processed throughout the value chain into various downstream industries. The application of ASI's CoC Standard connects proven practises at different stages of the supply chain - certified under the ASI Performance Standard - to the goods manufactured by ASI Certified Entities.
“We congratulate Alba on achieving certification against the new ASI CoC Standard V2 at its calciner and smelter in Bahrain. Due diligence on upstream material sourcing helps to mitigate social and environmental risks in supply chains. ASI’s Chain of Custody Standard provides a roadmap to support companies on implementing responsible sourcing and other practices that can increase transparency, improve compliance, and help identify and address associated upstream risks,” said Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI.
