Aluminium making way into building cutting-edge soccer stadiums globally

Aluminium is increasingly becoming the material of choice for building commercial architecture, especially new-age sports venues (read stadiums). Elaborated renovation is being carried out to give football stadiums all over the world a swank makeover through the use of aluminium, an eco-friendly metal with immense lightweighting advantages. Whether as part of the roofing or the bleachers, aluminium building systems are being used in seating, onsite sculpture, and signage.

At the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Stadium in China, 56 aluminium petals make up the roof of the building, which is slated to open next year. The roof is built using 1.2 mm thick, pre-painted aluminium sections manufactured by Novelis.


Next year, the fans of the Atlanta Falcons football team and the new Atlanta United Major League Soccer club will get to cheer their teams in a brand new venue- the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, being currently built at a total estimated cost of $1.7 billion. The project includes recycling giant Novelis among its 14 founding partners. It will be the NFL's first LEED Platinum-certified venue. The stadium's solar power system is expected to deliver 40 percent savings in energy use, with a 42 percent increase in water efficiency.

Outside the stadium, artists from London plan to place a 35-foot-high football- entirely made of aluminium and stainless steel, to welcome fans at the new soccer venue.

Recycled aluminium is used extensively in the building construction, and Novelis and the Atlanta Falcons began a "Recycle for Good" campaign to challenge Falcons fans to collect 3 million aluminium cans during the 2016 season.

Finally, in Minsk, Belarus, the Dinamo Stadium is also being decked up with a new aluminium roof that will cover 70 per cent of fans seating inside. The renovated stadium is scheduled to open in 2017.
