Mozal SA, a primary aluminium smelter, has bagged the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative Performance Standard Certification with Provisional status for its smelting operation and related port facilities at Maputo. The smelter, located just outside the capital Maputo, a major industrial place in Mozambique, is operated by South32 and has an annual output of over a half a million tonnes.
{alcircleadd}South32 owns 47.1 per cent of Mozal Aluminium, Mitsubishi Corporation Metals holds 25 per cent, Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited 29 per cent, and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique 3.9 per cent.

Samuel Samo Gudo, Vice President Operations at Mozal SA, said: "We are pleased to receive certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). ASI certification is an important step in supporting responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium across the value chain. This forms part of our strategy to deliver on international ESG performance standards.”
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, said: “We congratulate Mozal on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification with Provisional status at its Maputo smelting operation. The Mozal smelter opened in 2000 and is the largest industrial employer in the country. Its ASI Certification demonstrates the company’s commitment to pursue responsible production practices, and provides a platform and direction for continuous improvement.”
The independent, third-party audit of Mozal SA operation and related port operations was carried out by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH.
