UK-based EV technology firm Electrogenic has introduced an electrification kit tailored for the first-generation Mazda MX-5, with a focus on aluminium-centric innovation. This 'plug-and-play' solution allows Mazda MX-5 enthusiasts to transform their petrol-powered roadsters into aluminium-chassised electric vehicles while preserving the car's lightweight aluminium structure and enhancing performance.

{alcircleadd}Central to the kit is a 42kWh battery pack, cleverly distributed between the front, beneath the aluminium bonnet, and the space formerly occupied by the fuel tank. Impressively, the boot remains untouched, maintaining its original storage capacity.
The vehicle is driven by a compact motor generating 120kW of power, channelled through a single-speed fixed-ratio gearbox. This configuration delivers an impressive 2,500Nm of torque to the rear wheels (310Nm at the crank). The conversion is compatible with both manual and automatic MX-5 models, and as no structural modifications are required, it is fully reversible.
The electrified MX-5 boasts a superior power-to-weight ratio, offering a 0-100km/h acceleration in six seconds and a top speed of 185km/h. This performance, paired with the car's aluminium-based lightweight construction, promises to invigorate the driving experience.
Drivers can switch between three modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—to suit their preferences. With a range exceeding 240km and CCS rapid charging that achieves a full charge in approximately one hour, the aluminium-enhanced MX-5 ensures an efficient, enjoyable journey for its enthusiasts.
