Crown recognises facilities with the Chairman's Sustainability Awards for their outstanding achievement

Crown Holdings, one of the world's largest aluminium can manufacturers, has just disclosed the recipients of its annual Chairman's Sustainability Awards. These prestigious accolades recognize specific manufacturing sites within the organisation's worldwide network for their outstanding achievements in three key areas: environmental sustainability, safety practices, and social responsibility. The current awards cycle commemorates the program's 10th anniversary and acknowledges the collaborative efforts of its extensive staff over the last decade.

"From making critical process improvements that boost workplace safety and reduce our environmental footprint to going above and beyond in the face of tragedy to protect their colleagues in need, our employees continue to astound us with their determination—even after 10 years of this awards program," said Timothy Donahue, President, CEO & Chairman of the Board at Crown Holdings.

The Environmental Sustainability Award went to Crown's beverage can production in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The award acknowledges outstanding efforts to safeguard the environment by lowering material consumption, decreasing the effect of the company's operations, and enhancing recycling and resource reuse.

In 2022, the plant saved 8.4 million gallons of water and avoided 170,000 pounds of landfill trash due to water use; this was made possible by improving overflow operations to minimize washer water usage. As part of its Twentyby30 initiative, the company aims to cut water use in half by 2025 and eliminate landfill trash.

This year's Sustainability Award for Safety was bestowed on two plants. Crown's Ponta Grossa beverage can factory in Brazil and the Bengaluru facility in India's Transit Packaging Division have shown commendable commitment to enhancing employee well-being, enhancing accident prevention measures, and fostering a secure working environment.

The Ponta Grossa crew installed new features such as gates, guardrails, lifelines, and anchor points to make the worksite safer at different heights. They also installed an automated tilting system to help workers empty big containers of coatings and other chemicals without getting hurt or spilling them.

"We are grateful for our regional teams' continued commitment to our Twentyby30 program and the even more impressive impact we see across our global organization as a unified group. Congratulations to the winners of our 2023 Chairman's Sustainability Awards and to all the teams working diligently to help us continue to become the best steward possible," added Timothy Donahue.

Additionally, the facility implemented a novel apparatus to supplant the need to use a sledgehammer during maintenance operations, mitigating the potential for hand-related accidents and enhancing overall process safety. Implementing these modifications has led to a notable reduction of 49% in recordable events compared to the plant's performance in 2021.

Installation of a secure ladder and water level sensors to reduce the risk of falls, along with the installation of new forklift safety features and sensors and barricades for sealing and cutting machines, were among the numerous production changes implemented at the Prime Bulk facility to enhance working conditions for employees.

With 1,871 days going by without an accident, the plant's total recordable incident rate (TRIR) remained zero as of December 31, 2022. Crown Beverage Can Plant in Osmaniye, Turkey, won this year's Social Sustainability Award for improving working conditions and community welfare. In early 2023, when the Maraş-Turkey earthquakes caused great destruction, the team showed incredible compassion and fortitude. As a haven for 168 individuals, including displaced workers and their families, the facility provided temporary lodging, hygiene supplies, and food after the tragedy.
