The downstream aluminium sector witnessed an active week started from August 14, 2023, with 17 new Chinese battery foil projects commissioning production, Sansera Engineering Ltd, a precision-forged and machined aluminium components manufacturer, planning to invest INR 300 crore for capacity expansion, and Beijing Easpring, a Chinese manufacturer of battery cathodes, constructing a production plant for for ternary cathode active material. In addition, Capral Limited, Goyal Aluminiums Ltd, and Hind Aluminium announced their financial results this week.
As per the report covered by AL Circle on August 16, China is going to have 17 new aluminium battery foil projects. Some are under construction, while some have started production. The 17 projects will have a total production capacity of 1.272 million tonnes, and 15 of them are estimated to be fully operational before the end of 2024. Increasing prominence of the aluminium battery foil industry, with production grown to almost double, has prompted China to commission new capacities.

Precision-forged and machined aluminium components manufacturer Sansera Engineering Ltd is planning to invest INR 300 crore in FY2024 for capacity expansion and line balancing to cater to the growing order book. The expanded facility is likely to have all the aluminium forged and machine product categories of components, aligning with the company's long-term sales contribution target of 20% for xEV and tech-agnostic products.

DFV, an Italian company that paints wood-effect aluminium extrusions and laminates, is constructing its second production facility in Brazil. The new entity will concentrate on the market for high-end wood-effect finishes and RAL paints (an international colour system used primarily in industry and architecture to standardise and identify particular colours). The plant will be constructed on an 8 thousand m2 plot of land, with plans to expand by another 4 thousand m2 until 2027.

This week, AL Circle also reported that China’s aluminium plate/sheet and strip exports in June 2023 dropped by 3 per cent month-on-month and tumbled by 34 per cent year-on-year to amount to 224,500 tonnes. That brought the total exports during the year’s first half to 1.3932 million tonnes, down by 28 per cent from the previous year.

Some of the downstream companies announced financial results this week, such as Hind Aluminium, a manufacturer of aluminium & alloy conductors and aluminium wire rods, reported net sales of INR 0.38 crore in the June quarter versus INR 0.33 crore a quarter ago and INR 1 crore a year earlier. At the end of FY2023, Hind Aluminium’s net sales amounted to INR 2.38 crore.

Goyal Aluminiums Ltd, a metal trading services company, reported net sales of INR 16.24 crore for the first quarter of FY2024, which stood 71.65 per cent higher than the previous quarter. The operating profit also increased by 111.63 per cent, reaching INR 0.91 crore.

Automobile parts manufacturer Endurance Technologies declared Q1 FY2024 revenue of INR 2,467 crore, up by 16 per cent from INR 2,118 crore a year ago. The EBITDA arrived at INR 338 crore with a margin of 13.7 per cent compared to INR 244 crore with an 11.5 per cent margin last year.

Capral Limited reported stronger result for H1 2023 that their expectations. The company’s net cash stood at $41.2 million at the end of the year’s first half and net profit after cash at $16.6 million. Underlying EBITDA rose slightly from $31.6 million in H1 2022 to $31.7 million in H1 2023. A steady graph was also seen in Capral’s underlying EBIT at $20.7 million in H1 2023 versus $21 million in H1 2022.

Beijing Easpring, a Chinese manufacturer of battery cathodes, is reportedly in the process of constructing a production plant for ternary cathode active material in southeast Finland. This plant will mainly produce considerable amounts of nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) 811 and nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA). The project is being developed in partnership with Finnish Battery Chemicals, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Finnish Minerals.

Gulf Aluminium Rolling Mill (GARMCO), a major downstream aluminium firm in the Middle East headquartered in Bahrain, received legal guidance from Baker McKenzie, a top-tier global law firm, regarding debt restructuring to creditors, following the reorganisation plan approved by the courts of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The group of creditors comprised Ahli United Bank, National Bank of Bahrain, Mashreq Bank, Arab Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Aluminium Bahrain.
