Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC) on 27th July’20 made public that its employees have completed 12 months without a lost-time accident. With a frequency rate of 0.61%, this performance positions GAC among the most successful mining companies in the world in terms of occupational health and safety.
Abdul Nasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, the sole owner of GAC, told the general meeting of company employees: “I am impressed with the performance of the GAC in health and safety and I want to congratulate each of you. Last May, you reached 12 months with Zero lost-time accidents. Your total recordable accident frequency rate is 0.61, which makes GAC a world-class organization with one of the lowest rates in the mining world. "
This great performance is the outcome of the efforts made by all GAC employees and subcontractors. The safety and health of employees remain an outright pre-eminence for the company, which has set itself a goal of "Zero accidents" for all stakeholders in its mining operations. It has been for years the company has applied a diligent health and safety policy to avert any accident that could cause injury or result in death.
Employees of the company as well as the subcontractors regularly follow training courses on risky attitudes and behaviour in the area of operation and are required to strictly comply with health & safety instructions on the mining and port facilities and even beyond.
Dereck Guilfoyle, Director of Health, Safety, Environment at GAC said “These are significant and commendable achievements for a project that completes its construction and accelerates its mining operations to ensure its ramp-up to 12 million tonnes of bauxite exported per year. We must maintain our focus on health and safety and those we pursue our goal of zero injuries.”
