The Indonesian aluminium giant PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum in vernacular known as Inalum attained aluminium production of 243,000 tonnes while sales were recorded at 218,000 tonnes in 2021.
The Mining Industry Indonesia (MIND ID) holding company depended on aluminium commodities by diversifying the portfolio into ingots, alloys, and billets.
On 20th January 2022, Danny Praditya, the Director of Operations and Portfolio stated, “Throughout 2021, in the middle of the second year of the pandemic, the company will continue to optimize the operational effectiveness of its aluminium smelter by keeping the entire business chain running.”
He further added, “Maintaining the supply chain of raw materials to the performance of Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA) as the main energy source, the 2021 performance was proven to be maintained amid the COVID-19 pandemic and continued to contribute to all stakeholders and the community.”
“The achievement of Inalum operating's positive performance is highly supported by the optimal performance of the aluminium smelting facility namely carbon reduction and molding plants.”
“Last year, the average furnace operation was recorded at 458 units out of a total of 510 units or 90% of the installed capacity in the reduction plant,” he said.
Furthermore, to smelting plants, he also said, “Hydropower is also the main indicator to support operational performance. Last year, the Inalum operating PLTA generated a total of 4,041,774 MWh of electrical energy with a consumption rate of 4,027,118 MWh.”
Inalum’s operations also recorded a surplus of electricity distributed to PT PLN (Persero) of 41,447 MWh, an increase of 10% from the previous year.
"The use of new and renewable energy in the aluminium production process makes Inalum operating the only smelter that produces low emissions in the entire MIND ID Group," he commented.
“Inalum pursues to be committed to increasing value-added product through the national aluminium industry cluster development initiative. Through its subsidiary PT Indonesia Aluminum Alloy (IAA), the company will gradually produce secondary aluminium billets with a printing capacity of 50,000 tonnes per year and in the future, various extruded aluminium products as derivative products," Danny concluded by saying.
