On Tuesday, February 21, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative announced that Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN) has received ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V1 (2017) Certification for the planning, mining, transport, processing, and river transportation of bauxite, as well as power generation, at the MRN site in Porto Trombetas, Brazil.
{alcircleadd}In January 2022, the facility received ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification. With an annual production of approximately 12 million tonnes, the firm is the largest Brazilian producer and exporter of bauxite. For Guido Germani, CEO of MRN, certification means that the firm will continue to monitor market and societal shifts in addition to the fundamentals of sustainable growth in the Amazon Rainforest.
"We are in continuous search for the best socio-environmental practices. The care we provide to the company also extends to the environment and to people, including our employees and the surrounding communities. The certification is the result of this daily commitment," said Guido Germani, CEO at MRN.
The ASI CoC Standard specifies the standards for establishing a Chain of Custody for items generated and processed along the value chain into various downstream industries. The application of ASI's CoC Standard connects verified processes at different stages of the supply chain - certified under the ASI Performance Standard - to the goods manufactured by ASI Certified Entities.
The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and due diligence processes are in place to identify and address critical issues in the supply chain, such as corruption, human rights violations, materials originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas, and to support responsible sourcing. Bureau Veritas Certification conducted an impartial, third-party MRN Porto Trombetas plant audit.
“We congratulate MRN on achieving ASI CoC Standard Certification for its Porto Trombetas facility. Aluminium from primary sources is part of the mix to meet growing downstream demand for aluminium, and this starts at the bauxite mine. MRN’s dual certification shows its commitment to the ongoing process of implementing and improving responsible production practices, and connecting to ASI’s chain of custody model for responsible sourcing,” added Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI.
