The National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco) was allotted the Pottangi bauxite mines in Koraput district after the public hearing for environment clearance approved the mining project. Thousands of villagers around Pottangi block attended the meeting and expressed their support for the project. The hearing was held as a part of the statutory conditions for getting mining rights.
{alcircleadd}Present and past members of Parliament of Koraput and others were also present in the meeting. For the company’s expansion plans this additional source of bauxite is essential. Pottangi bauxite mine will have a production capacity of 3.5 MTPA. The mining lease is expected to benefit and contribute for the development of Pottangi and adjoining areas. A press release says that apart from infrastructure development, opening up of new business establishments, public services, it will also facilitate direct and indirect employment to the local youths.
Nalco confirmed that there will be no displacement during mining activity in Pottangi bauxite mine and NALCO will adopt modern technology besides sustainable practices for effective environment management.
Company officials of Nalco outlined the details of 31 developmental projects being executed under CSR at an estimated cost of INR 12 crore as a part of its development works around Pottangi block. Nalco’s afforestation, reclamation and environment protection measures in the existing Panchpatmali bauxite mine are already well recognized.
Pottangi mine will be an additional source of bauxite which will cater to the company's expansion plans.
