Novelis Inc., an American industrial aluminium company, specialised in making flat-rolled products (FRPs) and recycling, announced today that it initiated operations of a closed-loop-recycling with Smart Press Shop (SPS). In the partnership, Novelis supplies aluminium FRPs from its Nachterstedt plant in Germany to the Smart Press Shop and collects production scrap generated at SPS during the automotive manufacturing process to convert it into high-quality rolled sheets.
{alcircleadd}This process is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 100,000 tonnes per year, as recycling aluminium requires 95 per cent less energy to produce than primary aluminium.
SPS selected Novelis as a trusted partner in developing and implementing closed-loop recycling systems around the globe for esteemed automakers like BMW, VOLVO, Nissan, Ford, and Jaguar Land Rover. For the automotive industry, recycling programmes are the best possible way to achieve carbon reduction goals.
"SPS and Novelis are ideal partners to advance the automotive industry closer to achieving the standards of a circular economy through sustainable material sourcing and production," said Michael Hahne, Vice President, Automotive, Novelis Europe.
He added, "At Novelis, we have a remarkable story to tell about our closed-loop-recycling innovations. From our objective of achieving zero waste-to-landfills to becoming carbon neutral, we take our responsibility as a global sustainability leader very seriously and look forward to all that we can achieve with SPS."
Hendrik Rothe, Managing Director of SPS, said: "High-end car customers have a clear vision of what they expect manufacturers to provide, and in addition to premium quality, sustainability is playing an increasing role. With our partner Novelis, we are able to take intelligent automotive designs and manufacturing to new heights by making more efficient, sustainable automotive components and increasing the resiliency of our supply chain."
The partnership of Novelis and SPS has already bagged projects for premium car makers and working to supply sustainable aluminium car body parts to more automotive companies.
