Overview of the Portland Aluminium Smelter and the Portland Water Treatment Plant
Situated in the heart of the industrial zone, the Portland Aluminium smelter stands as a symbol of the aluminium industry's prowess. Its proximity to the Portland Water Treatment Plant reinforces a commitment to environmental responsibility, ensuring a harmonious coexistence with nature.
The Portland Energy Park: A Sustainable Powerhouse
Pacific Green's proposed energy park spans approximately 30 hectares, housing four 250-megawatt battery energy parks, a 500/33-kilovolt collector, and a 500-kilovolt terminal station. This strategic setup is designed to provide critical support to existing and upcoming renewable energy projects within Victoria's Southwest Renewable Energy Zone.
Driving Sustainable Production
The Portland Energy Park is not merely a power solution; it's a catalyst for sustainable production. By displacing more expensive gas generation during evening peak periods, the project aims to achieve an estimated 3.8 per cent reduction in total wholesale energy costs for Victorian households. This reduction not only fosters economic benefits but also aligns with the global shift towards cleaner energy alternatives.
Environmental Impact
Beyond economic advantages, Pacific Green's initiative is poised to make a significant environmental impact. By avoiding approximately 66,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the project contributes to the imperative goal of reducing carbon footprint.
Pacific Green's Managing Director for Australia, Joel Alexander, exemplified in a statement, "We are thrilled to announce our second battery energy storage project in Australia."
"The Portland Energy Park will significantly reduce Victoria's wholesale market volatility and, in turn, lower prices during the transition towards net zero," he added.
