The Chinese company engaged in alumina refinery project, PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI), will commence its operations in early 2021 in the Galang Batang Special Economic Zone (KEK), Bintan Regency, Riau Islands.

Santoni, President Director of PT BAI stated that currently, BAI is the lone company that to process bauxite in the Riau Islands.
"So it is estimated that in January or February 2021 it can operate," he commented.
The bauxite to be processed to alumina by PT BAI will not only from Bintan Island but also from several regions of Kalimantan.
"The electricity supply is almost ready. We estimate that the PLTU in the operational location will start operating in December 2020," said Santoni.
"There are a few obstacles related to land claims made by people who claim to be land cultivators. We leave this matter to the authorities," he said.
Santoni said: “The investment in Galang Batang not only adds to regional and state income but also encourages economic growth.”
"We prioritize residents working at PT BAI. We provide special training for them in China," he concluded.
