Recycled aluminium weekly recap: China's secondary aluminium operating rates down 0.25% in April; Nissan invests £52 million into scrap extraction

Right from a dip in secondary aluminium operating rates in China to Nissan’s £52 million investment into Sunderland facility for enabling the use of recycled and lightweight aluminium for the all-new Qashqai SUV, this week reported a plethora of events in the aluminium recycling industry. According to a report early this week, operating rates at China's secondary aluminium producers inched down 0.25 percentage point month-on-month in April to stand at 41.35 per cent. However, on a year-on-year calculation, operating rates in April recorded a hike of 17.92 percentage points. Operating rates at large enterprises increased slightly as furnaces resumed normal operation from maintenance in April.

Of 170,000 tonnes of the United States total aluminium scrap exports in March 2021, India imported 29,700 tonnes, according to the US Geological Survey’s latest data. This represented a month-on-month increase of 2,500 tonnes or 9.20 per cent from 27,200 tonnes but a decrease of 4,400 tonnes or 12.9 per cent from 34,100 tonnes a year ago.

South Korea's imports of aluminium scrap from the US stood at 19,700 tonnes in March 2021, a decrease of 28.36% from 27,500 tonnes in March 2020, as updated by the US Census Bureau. On a monthly basis, imports declined by 12% from 22,400 tonnes in February 2021.

The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) has announced that a record 20 million tonnes of post-consumer scrap intake in 2019, indicating nearly 60 per cent of total scrap intake. This also reduces 300 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions as the recycled metal reduces demand for primary aluminium. The post-consumer scrap intake came from three main sources – packaging, vehicles and building and construction.

Nissan has confirmed an investment of £52 million into its Sunderland facility for enabling the use of recycled and lightweight aluminium for the all-new Qashqai SUV. The automaker has invested in a second extra-large press line and a “cyclone” recycling facility that extracts scrap metal to be used by suppliers for the re-production of sustainable, lightweight aluminium body sheet.
