Use of aluminium in the solar power sector
Aluminium is at the forefront of innovation in the solar power sector, enhancing the efficiency and functionality of solar panels. Known for its lightweight nature and excellent properties like conductivity, reflectivity, strength, and durability, aluminium is increasingly preferred for renewable energy applications.
The process of aluminium extrusion, which involves shaping aluminium alloys into custom profiles under high pressure, provides essential characteristics such as corrosion resistance, lightweight durability, and superior conductivity. Alloys like 6063, 6061, and 6005 are well-suited for solar panel manufacturing.
Solar power has become the third-largest source of renewable electricity globally, following hydropower and wind, according to the International Energy Agency (2024). This remarkable achievement owes much to solar panel manufacturers, with China playing a pivotal role.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Germany reports that China accounts for 86 per cent of the world's annual solar panel production, while Europe and North America each contribute around 2 per cent. Notably, six of the top seven global solar panel manufacturers are based in China.
