In order to boost revenue by the end of 2018, SGB MY Sdn Bhd, a unit of Germany-based SGB SMIT Group is planning to venture into manufacturing aluminium oval transformers in Malaysia.
Managing director of the company Franz Hierz said the company expected the aluminium transformer to grow popular in other countries in the region like the Indian sub-continents, Australia and the Middle East.
{alcircleadd}Due to the cost advantage aluminium is slowly substituting copper in transformers offering customers a more viable option.
"The aluminium oval transformer has made a huge impact on the European market and is now ready to make its debut with a big bang in Malaysia and the Asian region," Hierz said during the introduction of the aluminium oval transformer at the Powering Energy Efficiency Conference held in Malayasia. More than 250 delegates from local and overseas companies from various sectors attended the conference.
He added that copper and aluminium have long been used as electrical conductors and they have been regularly used as winding conductors for transformers. In reliability and performance, aluminium windings have been proven to be equivalent to copper. However, in weight and cost aluminium has a significant advantage over copper and is suitable for specific applications where aluminium oval transformers are installed in the grid.
Achim Huebner of E.ON Global Category Lead Transformer, and Dr Jan Declercq, Group research and development manager of SGB-SMIT, shared the success story of the usage of the aluminium oval transformers in several countries in Europe and also in the US.
SGB MY, established in 1994, manufactures and sells oil distribution, cast resin, and power transformers. Its parent company, SGB–SMIT Group, has manufactured and supplied thousands of transformers with aluminium windings to domestic and international clients.
"Our Malaysia plant also offers after sales service, such as repairs, refurbishment, and overhaul, throughout Malaysia as well as for Malaysia’s export markets," he said.
SGB MY’s the Nilai plant has the capability of producing approximately 2,400 oil distribution and pad-mounted transformers, 60 power transformers, 1,800 cast resin transformers and 300 compact substations of up to 3,000kVA per unit.
SGB–SMIT Group has numerous manufacturing plants in Regensburg, Neumark, Sachsen in Germany, Nijmegen in The Netherlands, Louisville in USA and Sibiu in Romania.
