Stellantis, the multinational automotive manufacturing corporation, has announced that its Mulhouse foundry would produce die-cast aluminium housings to equip a new family of compact electric cars. For this, Stellantis will convert its foundry to electricity. The automaker has recently informed the unions that the plant would henceforth be dedicated to producing aluminium components for electric motors and will most likely be available by 2026.
The automaker's electro-mobility plan is still being implemented. Stellantis aims for 100 per cent electric car sales in Europe by 2030 in the individual vehicle market. The company pledges 100 vehicle releases (including 75 electric) and at least ten new models between 2022 and 2030.
{alcircleadd}"The Mulhouse foundry is confirmed as a strategic tool for the production of electric vehicles. This announcement assures the foundry of an electric future and strengthens its position," said Stéphane Dubray, Director of the Forge and Foundry Mechanical Pole in Mulhouse.
This new operation will use 50 per cent of the Mulhouse foundry's capacity. Stellantis predicts that demand will eventually shift from thermal to electric versions. Factory personnel are already acquainted with these crankcases since they are used in typical versions.
Stellantis' Mulhouse facility is unquestionably in the epicentre of innovation. The automaker has announced collaboration with Vulcan on a geothermal energy project. Both entities have reduced the carbon footprint of the Mulhouse industrial site's energy mix. Thanks to geothermal energy, Stellantis should be able to achieve carbon neutrality by 2038.
Stellantis and Vulcan want to employ geothermal energy at the Mulhouse industrial complex to achieve carbon neutrality. Several of the group's flagship models are made here, including the DS 7, Peugeot 308 and e-308, 508, and the new 408. The e-408, a fully electric sedan, will also be manufactured.
Stellantis' significant advances allow it to support more than 500 permanent employments on the Haut-Rhin site (350 for the foundry and 170 for the tool shop). The facility employs 4,500 permanent employees and 1,500 temporary employees. Mulhouse relies on this plant, and its rebirth is good.
