Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), a multinational, non-profit organisation with the mission of maximising aluminium's contribution to a sustainable society, seeks to advance sustainability throughout the whole aluminium value chain. ASI Aluminium is a metal manufactured and obtained in line with ASI Standards, starting with its mined or recycled source and continuing through every stage of the value chain.
{alcircleadd}ASI is the only responsible sourcing initiative covering procedures throughout the aluminium supply chain. This encompasses industries including packaging, transportation, building, and engineering, as well as upstream production and downstream usage sectors. The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) aims to advance sustainability along the whole value chain for aluminium. By proving their dedication to social, environmental, and ethical norms, ASI accreditation benefits both the aluminium industry and aluminium users.
Here are the top ASI certifications in 2022 for the Primary aluminium sector:
Emirates Global Aluminium: The Al Taweelah plant of Emirates Global Aluminium received the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative's Performance Standard Certification for sustainable performance on May 19th. The recertification covered EGA's port, power plant, carbon plant, potlines, casthouse, and waste management, including wasted pot lining and dross. The first ASI Performance Standard Certification for Al Taweelah was issued in 2019. After a thorough, independent on-site assessment of its environmental, social, and governance performance, covering biodiversity, human rights, transparency, community involvement, emissions, and waste management, Al Taweelah was awarded the accreditation once more.
INALUM: Asahan Aluminium (Persero), a state-owned aluminium manufacturer in Indonesia, joined the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative as a new Production and Transformation member. With this joining, the total number of ASI members came in at 217. The first state-owned primary aluminium smelting firm in Southeast Asia is PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero), also known as INALUM. Its annual smelting capacity is 250,000 tonnes, and it remains Indonesia's sole producer of primary aluminium.
S.A.V. S.p.A. Societa' Alluminio Veneto: To facilitate the manufacture of aluminium alloy ingots at the Colombo and Dell'Artigianato facilities in Italy, S.A.V. S.p.A. Societa' Alluminio Veneto obtained the ASI Performance Standard Certification. Nearly 100,000 tonnes of the product may be produced annually at the S.A.V. S.p.A. factories in Northern Italy.
Qatalum: Qatalum, a joint venture aluminium smelter between Qatar Petroleum and Norsk Hydro, had reportedly bagged dual certifications from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative. The smelter was certified under both the Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard for its primary aluminium smelting operations at Mesaieed Industrial City, Qatar, as well as the production of foundry alloys and extrusion ingots. The certification was an important milestone which reflected the company’s continued dedication to ethical and sustainable business practices throughout its value chain. They stated that they are happy to be able to provide ASI-certified aluminium products, which allows their customers and stakeholders the certainty of a worldwide recognised standard.
ALUCAM: The Cameroonian Aluminum Company ALUCAM was reportedly welcomed as a new Production and Transformation member of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative on Tuesday, March 22. The total number of members of the ASI now stands at 215. The industrial aluminium manufacturing firm ALUCAM is situated in Edéa, a city that serves as a hub for the Littoral, the Center, and South Cameroon had begun operations in 1957 and currently employs 600 people permanently to manufacture 100,000 tonnes of aluminium annually. The business also depends on a significant number of indirect jobs.
Aluminerie Alouette: For its aluminium smelter and casthouse in Sept-Îles, Quebec, Aluminerie Alouette, one of the biggest aluminium smelters in North America, acquired the Chain of Custody Standard (CoC) certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). The company obtained Performance Standard Certification in July 2020. On October 19, the ASI verified through the Bureau de normalisation du Québec, an independent authority and auditor, that the staff at Aluminerie Alouette produced 630,000 tonnes of aluminium annually following its specifications and high standards in procurement and following phases of the chain.
Yunnan Sunho Aluminum: Yunnan Sunho Aluminum Co. Ltd., a green hydropower aluminium project with a production capacity of roughly 900,000 tonnes, was successfully registered as the Production and Transformation member of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI).
Press Metal Bintulu: Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd, a division of Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad, was successfully certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative against the Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification on Tuesday, November 22. The company's aluminium smelting, re-melting/refining, casting, and internal recovery of aluminium dross at the Sarawak facility in Malaysia have been recognised by ASI through the certification. An earlier subsidiary of Press Metal, Press Metal International Ltd in Foshan, China, got ASI Performance Standard Certification with Provisional status for extrusion activities in September 2022.
Hammerer Aluminium Industries: The manufacture of extruded aluminium profiles at Hammerer Aluminium Industries (HAI) Extrusion SRL's facility in Chisineu-Cris, Romania, had achieved the ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) certification, according to a statement released on Wednesday, December 14, by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative. The company makes extruded profiles for electrical systems, machine and system engineering, heat sinks, heat exchangers, and electrical systems. The HAI factory has four extrusion lines with a yearly production capacity of around 22,000 tonnes. An unbiased, independent audit of the Hammerer Aluminium Industries Extrusion SRL Company was performed by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH.
Associação Brasileira do Alumínio: The Brazilian aluminium industry is driven by sustainability, which drives project implementation and decision-making. Associação Brasileira do Alumínio (ABAL) supports businesses throughout the value chain, from mining to recycling. At this point, companies involved in the whole value chain of the Brazilian aluminium industry, from manufacturing primary aluminium to bauxite mining to alumina production, all had achieved ASI accreditation. Companies in the recycling and primary metal processing industries have also received certification. To encourage its affiliates to get ASI accreditation, which is well-known in the consumer market for aluminium, joined ASI. The best sustainable practices are supported and promoted by ASI, which is more than just a certification. Because it recognises and rewards responsible management actions, it is becoming increasingly crucial.
