Top five prebaked anode manufacturers in China

Prebaked anode manufacturing has undergone a paradigm shift. Once strong base-the Americas, have reduced coal production due to stricter environmental rules, and the East (read China) has seized the opportunity to emerge as the biggest producer. The little anode quantity that is produced in the US mainly goes on to fulfil the market demand in Canada. In Venezuela, anodes are used by the local industry. Due to rapid development of the aluminium electrolytic industries and conversion of Söderberg plants to prebake operations, China has achieved an unprecedented growth in prebaked anode production in recent years. It is currently the top anode producing country in the world and accounts for about 50% of the third party anode requirement of Russia, Europe, North America, the Middle East and Australia.

In one of our previous articles in the ‘Top Producer’ series, we listed down the top five prebaked anode manufacturers in the world. While the enterprises mentioned therein, other than Aluchemie of the Netherlands, have drastically slashed their output, China producers have scaled their facilities to a great extent over the years. Following are the top five prebaked anode manufacturers in China based on the production updates provided by BAIINFO in their latest reports:

1. Guangxi Qiangqiang Carbon Co. Ltd. (GQG)

Guangxi Qiangqiang is located in Pingguo County, Nanning. It manufactures and distributes high-quality pre-baked anodes and graphitized carbon products. The company also manufactures aluminium electrolytic steel claws and casts for downstream manufacturers in and outside China.

2. Dezhou Yongxing Carbon

Once named Dezhou Carbon Factory, this carbon product manufacturer from China has progressed from a innominate country factory to a high-tech Joint Ventute over the last twenty nine years. The enterprise has fixed assets totalling RMB 260 million, self-support import and export authority, and annual output amounting to 100000 tonnes. Its main product is prebaked anode is the mainstay company of Dezhou County.

3. Jinan Aohai

Jinan Aohai Carbon Co Ltd is located in the Carbon Industrial Park of Kongcun, Jinan. Founded in 2001, Aohai has emerged as a prominent carbon product manufacturer of China.  The company's line of business includes manufacturing carbon and graphite products. Its products are pre-baked anodes for electrolytic aluminium with various specifications, which are widely used in aluminium factories (especially the 1,450mm and 1,500mm pre-baked anodes). Slotting anode, one of Aohai’s new energy-saving products, has gained wide acceptance among industry players because of its production craft and overall performance.

4. Jining Carbon

Jining Carbon- established three decades ago in Jining, Shandong, is the largest commodity carbon anode manufacture as well as one of the top five coal chemical companies in China. Its plant is connected to the country’s major ports such as Qingdao, Rizhao, and Lianyungang with convenient transportation. The leading product of Jining Carbon is pre-baked carbon anode with a per annum capacity of 320 thousand tonnes anode. It also owns tree coal tar processing lines with a total capacity of 400 thousand tonnes per year of coal tar pitch (modified pitch), a key binder material for manufacturing of prebaked anode.

5. Sunstone Development Co., Ltd

Sunstone specializes in the production and marketing of prebaked carbon anodes both in China as well as throughout the rest of the world. The company thrives on innovation and continuous improvement of anode quality. In order to support its commitment to R&D activities, it has even opened an independent R&D centre in China.

Sunstone owns two prebaked anode manufacturing facilities: one in Shandong Province in east China and another in Gansu Province of northwest China. Sunstone has widened its reach globally as well. It has valued business partners in Asia, Europe, America, Africa and the Middle East.

Other prominent prebaked anode producers and suppliers from China are Zhongdong Carbon, Jingxing Xinfeng Carbon, Jinan Wanfang Carbon, and Weiqiao Pioneering.

The availability of high-quality raw materials for anode production, unique technologies, experienced operators, governmental support and efficient logistics have made the further development of large-scale anode production facilities possible in China.

Currently, global prebaked anode market is facing supply-side challenges due production cut down in China following large-scale environment crackdowns. This has left world’s leading aluminium smelters relying overtly on Chinese producers for their anode requirements searching for alternative supply sources. Prices of prebaked anode have surged high, and so has the overall cost of production of aluminium.
