Also, starting on April 10, 2023, the White House would impose a 200 per cent duty on imports of "primary aluminium" produced in Russia.

President Joe Biden said in a statement released by the White House, “In adopting the tariff adjustment ….I recognise that concerns about aluminium imports from Russia and their impact on our national security are shared by other countries. We need to work with our partners to ensure that the global market distortions caused by Russian aluminium articles do not distort our markets and threaten our national security.”

Gina Raimondo, the US Secretary of Commerce, said in a separate statement, "President Biden has made it a priority to mitigate the effects of Russia's invasion on domestic industries critical to our national security, including the American aluminium industry."

"In imposing these tariffs, we are denying Russia an important market for its aluminium while taking a stand for America's workers."

On February 18, 2023, AlCircle reported that Russia might restrict exports of critical metals like nickel and palladium to the United States if the White House imposes a 200 per cent import tariff on Russian aluminium. Nickel is essential for the aerospace industry and electric vehicle batteries. Conversely, Palladium is a vital component for autocatalysts in gasoline-fuelled cars.
